Heat. It had turned the deck red. He was shielded from the worst of it by the ship’s own failing systems, but he could feel the warmth radiating out. The controls were sparking madly, and outside the ship, as the atmosphere of the Earth sucked them in – welcomed and embraced them – everything was fire. Red, orange, yellow – a million shades of death. The deck vibrated wildly, the ship groaning and shuddering under forces it could not hope to withstand. Nothing could save it, nothing could quench the fires now. Nothing but one final, gigantic explosion, bringing an end to all.
