Summary: They didn't put much thought into it after taking the drugs.
They didn't put much thought into it after taking the drugs; the medicine of the Thals must've been pretty advanced, more advanced than their own from their own time, and, therefore, they would be completely cured and fine. The nausea and headaches they would occasionally get were attributed to the stress of their adventures, or some injury — can you stop hitting your head, please? — and, at one point, after Rome, a scary possibility that wasn't true.
When they arrived home, and they sorted their situations — and the symptoms continued — something had to be done.
The answer they got was terrifying.
