“You want to see someone?” An orderly asked.

“Yes, a professor who was in the forest,” Quinn answered.

“And you are?”

“Quinn Morgendorffer. Joey and I were there when he was attacked.”

“Oh, he is in the general ward.”

“Thanks.”

The professor was surprised when he saw Quinn and Joey approaching. “You didn’t have to come.”

“How could I not?” Quinn asked.

“I don’t know what would have happened if we didn’t happen to be there,” Joey added.

“I think I would have managed to call the authorities. SpiderGirl would also have been there.”

‘She wouldn’t have been,’ Quinn thought. ‘And none of the others either, as they wouldn’t have not intervened just because I was there.’ She wondered how to broach the question. “There’s something I would like to ask you.”

“Go ahead,” the professor responded

“What do you think Oscorp was after?” Quinn answered.

“I wish I could answer that,” the professor answered quicky.

‘He’s hiding something,’ Quinn thought. ‘He thinks that something may be there.’

“You’re trying to keep what you’re looking for secret?” Joey asked.

“Yes. I promised the First Nation group indigenous to this area that I wouldn’t share without their approval, given that it is a Pre Columbian site,” the professor answered.

“That makes sense,” Quinn said.

“But what would Oscorp be after?” Joey asked.

“I have no idea,” the professor said.

But something in his tone told Quinn he was lying. “Or it’s part of the secret?” she asked.

“You are very perceptive,” the professor responded. “What I can say is that the oral histories say that something powerful is hidden there. Osborn, or people below him, must think that it means it is something that he can use.”

the irregularly scheduled dropping off the face of dreamwidth got me again, although this time at least i had a pretty good excuse.

life exploded in ways which weren't much fun, so between work, classes and generalised stress i feel like i haven't had time to do anything in my spare time except listen desperately to audiobooks for distraction for the past month and a half.

that said, my reading stats for this year are on track to be much better than last year. :'D

i read Heated Rivalry back in feb, alternating between audiobook and physical copy, mostly because i was curious and i can get books for cheap through work. the TL;DR of my thoughts on it is that its origins as a fanfic are very noticeable, and in some ways this is a positive, but overall it made it a little lackluster, imo.

cut just in case this is spoilery in any way )

then, for some mysterious reason known only to itself, my brain finally decided it was time i started reading Discworld properly, so i've spent march more or less marathoning the Watch novels from Men at Arms through Night Watch and now i'm giving Guards Guards a quick reread before i move onto Thud.

i'm trying to pace myself a smidgen now that i only have two books left; i'm not ready for the Watch series to be over!!

March Media

5 April 2026 05:45 pm
glinda: I want everything I've ever seen in the movies (movies)
[personal profile] glinda
In March, I was mostly watching films. In general terms not that many films - five new-to-me films - but given last year’s hideously low number of films that weren’t re-watches I’m going to call it a victory. It took me until August to get to this many films last year, so while my new-to-me books is still looking grim and my audio series list doesn’t bear mentioning, at least my film watching is fairly healthy.

In my quest to actually get something written, given the general uptick in watching new-to-me films, I went on a binge of documentaries in the Storyville strand on iPlayer, and wrote them up for the film blog. (I’ve been full of the desire to write but seriously lacking the inspiration for it.) I also decided after K-pop Demon Hunters that I’d try and watch a bunch of last year’s films that I missed and write those up too, but I only managed Sinners though in fairness, it was an absolute banger. (They deserved every last nomination, acting and sound in particular.) I’m really glad I managed to see it in the cinema - my local arthouse cinema was screening it ahead of the Oscars so I saw it with like 20 other people who’d all either seen it before and loved it or like me and had missed it the first time and were keen to be impressed, it was a good audience vibe, is what I’m saying - because the sound was immense, it really benefited from having the big screen good sound system experience. Speaking of films that benefited from being on the big screen, I saw Project Hail Mary in the cinema this week. Just a delight. (Rocky!) Ryan Gosling and Sandra Hüller acting their wee hearts out in what is ultimately quite a silly film. Too long obviously, but honestly I barely cared. (Also I’m not really across a lot of pop music, but what do you mean Harry Styles wrote that song? I presumed it was a cover of something 70s but no it’s just a homage to Bowie and glamrock, significantly more impressed with that lad’s talents now. Though mostly I need me a copy of Sandra Hüller singing it.) And, it has my favourite Beatles song in it. There’s a LEGO set I can’t justify but really, really want.

With the election period upon us, I figured what I actually needed was a nice straight-forward knitting project to work on while on the road and generally too brain-fried to deal with anything too complicated. So I’m making a loop scarf in a basic shell pattern - it’s basically one row of straight forward lace shaping and one row of purl stitch, knit until you run out of wool - in alternating colours, so is a nice way to use up a set of hand-dyed mini-skeins that I bought during lockdown and have been waiting for a project since then. It’s excellent TV knitting, though mostly I’ve been doing it while catching up on my podcast backlog. (I’ve spent a lot of this weekend catching up on Gastropod and 99% Invisible) I’m hoping to do a bit more actual TV watching, there’s a bunch of things serieses I want to tackle, but I’m not going to talk about those plans until I’ve actually started them in the hope that they’ll actually happen. It’s always such a crapshoot these last few years what will and won’t catch and hold my attention on that front.

Resurrection Sunday
John 20:1 - 18
The Power of the Resurrection

vs 5 - 7
The burial clothes were just lying there, as if the body had vanished.

John believed. He was sure.

Mary crying in grief.
From the Divine perspective, the tears were inappropriate at that time and place.
Yet, Jesus was understanding. He called Mary by name.

1 Samuel 3
The LORD calling Samuel.
Eli - "Speak LORD, for your servant is listening."
But it's at the LORD's timing, not the servant's.

Mary and the disciples didn't have a large enough view of Jesus.

In times of fear and doubt Jesus brings comfort.

Been a very bad, bad boy when it comes to checking out Dreamwidth. Sorry... To compensate, here's some random stuff.

Recently watched Louis J. Gasnier and George Cukor's The Virtuous Sin, which is a pretty serviceable romdramedy (romantic comedy-drama, which is a subject matter that should not work, yet somehow kinda does). Victor's actor is destroying the ever-loving-fuck out of the scenery with his mashers, though. He's the worst part.

Anyway, the reason I watched it was, essentially, very shallow. Paramount had a German version made. And in the role of General Platoff, we have Conrad Veidt. And I want it so bad.

I want to see him go from "Ironface" (Eisengesicht?)

To whatever this is

I want to see him hold a coat to the air and throw documents at people and play with and throw around a riding crop (yes, I know Kaiserin exists but you know he would do it completely different here). I want to hear him say those lines! I want to see him on the seesaw! The seesaw! And that uniform...

E. from Villain by Accident posted the first part of their analysis of Veidt's second stay in Hollywood, mostly about Escape.

I'm having trouble with stumfilm.dk at the moment, but they recently published an article about new soundtracks for silent films made by music students!

Movies 'n' stuff: FilmotecaUNAM's playlist of silent films, Cinematheque's HENRI platform (watched Musidora's Vicenta on there), Elonet for Finnish films, MOSFilm for that Soviet stuff. The EYE is supreme.

A song in a different language:

Oh, come on! Damn near every song I love lately is in a different language!

Takes deep breaths to calm down

I will take this as a challenge, however. Let's try to find something that isn't in Korean or Korean and English. I don't know if I can -

Oh. OK. I found one; I remembered it. And it's one I love.

"Waters of March" by Antonio Carlos Jobim (also known, although I didn't know this until today, as Tom Jobim) is a bossa nova favorite of mine, partly because of the simple yet sophisticated music and the very striking English words - a litany of good and bad things that come together in the end to be about "the joy in your heart" after all those good and sometimes very bad things.

Persistence and Promise

Bob and I attended the No Kings 3.0 rally closest to us, in Evanston's lakeside Dawes Park. Estimates later put the attendance at 2,000, a respectable number, given the lack of parking that the park offered (previous No Kings rallies were held in downtown Evanston). We left before the march, since our aging backs weren't up for it, but it was good to be there. One of the things that hit hardest for me were an incredibly long line of stakes with pictures of people attached to them, every one of them someone who died at the hands of ICE or CBP, either directly or indirectly. All those faces reminded me of one of the things we're fighting for as we try to remain a representational democracy; an end to murder, at home and abroad.

Sarah was curled up in an armchair, quietly decompressing from a day of meetings. Her meandering thoughts were interrupted by Jareth entering the room. He was a vision dressed all in white and both her eyes and her thoughts went south as she wondered about the structural integrity of the very tight trousers he had seemingly had painted on.

Jareth grinned in delight at her perusal and took an exceedingly long time to carefully place each cushion on the floor, making sure to bend over each time to shamelessly flaunt his assets, before he draped himself across the pile.

“See something you like?”

Sarah tilted her head in open appraisal. “The work of an exceedingly talented tailor.”

“You wound me!” Jareth dramatically clutched his chest.

“If anything rent the fabric of those pants they’d explode off you like a stripper’s prop.” Sarah laughed at her husband’s theatrics and raised an eyebrow. “I don’t know that they’d survive your getting excited.”

“Is that a challenge?” Jareth’s eyes glittered in amusement.

“Perhaps. But first tell me how your project is fairing.”

They’d had a handful of adults from a small town who were wished away by unrelated children to deal with and Jareth had taken an interest in finding a solution. It seemed that two groups had ensconced themselves on the periphery of the town and were making life difficult for the community. Their members managed to tick multiple boxes for antisocial behaviour and, for all of their proclaimed desire to avoid others, they went out of their way to alienate their neighbours.

“They all have a fetish for weaponry, yet no comprehension of their proper use and storage.” Jareth shook his head in disgust. “They wave them around like toys and carry them like a child’s security blanket. Their encampments are riddled with holes from accidental discharges.”

“Are the goblins safe?” Sarah knew they’d been involved on the ground, but not the potential danger of the situation.

“They’ve been spell shielded. We’re dealing with highly paranoid people who are phobic of everything not like themselves and they walk around armed to the teeth. I wove a rebound into the spellwork.” Jareth’s grin was malevolent. “That’s taken care of several of the offenders.”

Sarah appreciated the elegance of the solution. Regardless of whether someone shot or swung a gardening tool at a goblin, the impact would instead injure the attacker. “What of the rest?”

“All it took was a little goblin shenanigans in moving things around and a trail of glitter.” Jareth chuckled darkly. “The two groups launched an armed assault against each other and the Above authorities finally took an interest in their behaviour.”

Sarah shuddered. She would have preferred a less lethal ending, but they had allowed a known child molester to prey on the local community and threatened them in a myriad of ways on a daily basis. “I don’t expect the township will mourn their demise.”

“Indeed.” Jareth stretched provocatively. “Now tell me more about these stripper trousers.”
