It happened every day. When class was excused, the boy ran for the door. He didn’t listen to the teacher calling for him to stop. He couldn’t stop. The pounding of his heart told him run, run. The pounding of his feet against the ground was the only thing that felt real.
He ran across the red grass up the tallest hillside, his ribs aching, and looked through silver-leafed trees toward the orange horizon. There was so much to see out there-- out there, not at school. And if he wanted to see it all, he could never stop running.
