The compass is broken. It’s not like the Doctor didn’t know that when he pulled it out after their cunning escape from the alien warlord’s prison. The cracked glass is a give away, as is the arrow not moving an inch regardless of which direction they walk in. Not particularly helpful when separated from the TARDIS, on a desert planet.
He closes his eyes and lets his busy mind go blank. It takes a while but he can hear her. His patient ship is broadcasting her presence directly to him, better than any homing beacon. Calling him home.
He smiles.
