When he leaves them (smiling, secure, safe in their silly, skim-milk, sedulous lives), he's able to disappear, for a time. Back into black, the beyond, the bountiful -ness of nothing-and-everything that welcomes him in with oblique, obliging, obsequious arms. Arms? No. Entrails. No! Hearts. Hearts, or the local equivalent – beating pounding pumping writhing squeezing living. Right! Life. That's what he was on about; that's what this is all about! And so he's back, always back ever back, returning, reviving, recrudescing. Reoccurring, rendezvousing or just first encountering, he is the Doctor, and they are about to learn how to live.
