UNIT. It was an innocent enough name. No reason for anybody to suspect what it might be about. Slowly, Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart ran a hand along the painfully new leather of his chair. It was all so unremarkable. There had certainly been little enough ceremony to his appointment. Just a few words from the Secretary-General, in a dusty little back room that few people even knew existed. It wasn’t how the storybooks liked to say that adventures were born, but Lethbridge-Stewart knew better. The universe was full of monsters. From today, he was the first line of defence against them all.

Loved this. I always had a hard time imagining UNIT without the Brig, so it's nice to know he was there from the start.

I'm pretty sure it's canon that he's there from the start. When he meets the Doctor for the second time, he explains that UNIT has been set up to combat the sort of threats that they had dealt with together on their first meeting. It's always been the Brig's special responsibility. Nice to see it staying in the family in the most recent series.
